BLUEMACH performances

CPI has developed its new atmospheric plasma reactor, BLUEMACH, with two main objectives in mind:

  • Increasing the treatment speed
  • Decreasing the gas consumption

Tests carried on BOPP show that those objectives have been fulfilled.  BOPP was selected for the test as it’s a common polymer and one that is not easily modified by plasma (or corona).  The following criteria were used:

Only the process conditions fulfilling the above criteria were considered successful.  Two configurations were used for the tests.  For the first one, nitrogen was the only gas used.  For the second one, a dopant gas was added to the nitrogen in order the maximize the treatment speed. 

  1. Without dopant the minimal gas consumption is <2 liters of nitrogen per square meter of treated BOPP, the treatment speed is 150 m/min.  The maximal treatment speed is 200 m/min.
  2. Using a dopant, the minimal gas consumption is 3 liters of nitrogen per square meter of treated BOPP, the treatment speed is 200 m/min.  The maximal treatment speed is 375 m/min.

Using less stringent requirements allows for treatment speed up to 500 m/min.
